Life at Virgin Media
Developing people – something for everyone
At Virgin Media Television we put Learning and Development at the heart of our culture, and pride ourselves in developing talent. We believe in investing in you as an individual, and value our people and the talent we nurture for the future.
Our mantra, “something for everyone” will provide you with the opportunity to develop yourself both personally and professionally, as well as part of a team or as a manager. A range of workshops, job shadowing and mentoring opportunities are all on offer along side the more traditional “training courses” you would expect to participate in to support you in the day to day activities of your job.
On joining Virgin Media Television you can expect within your first few months to be an attendee of the Virgin Induction Programme or "VIP” which will, even if you’re not new to the world of Television, provide you with a quick and whistle stop tour of Telly and how we do what we do at Virgin Media Television.
We believe that identifying development opportunities is a two way process, with individuals taking responsibility for their own learning. Therefore, we expect you to identify your own needs and discuss these with your manager, and we work closely with both you and your manager to deliver your learning needs, plus any needs which may be identified with you by your manager.
Our Annual Appraisal process involves the creation of a personal development plan, with routine reviews, which provide you and your manager with the opportunity to discuss and continually review your learning and development objectives, and celebrate your successes and achievements throughout the year.
It’s not all about work either, the Virgin Media Television Life Skills Bursary Award offers you the opportunity to apply for funds or time off to take any course, undertake any project, support a secret hobby or fulfil that life long dream. You would need to demonstrate thought, creativity and commitment to enhance an element of your life with your chosen bursary application – it’s your peers who decide on the successful Award winner ! So far, since launching the Award we have supported our people through night school at Drama School, charity work in Sri Lanka, Diplomas in Reflexology and Massage, Driving Lessons, and Singing lessons to name but a few of our successful Award winners.
We keep an eye on the industry, and participate actively across the industry to support and promote learning and development activity through the Broadcast Training and Skills Regulator (BTSR) and Skillset.
We are proud of our talent, and individuals who have received industry recognition this year have included Amy Barham, Senior Acquisitions Executive, Chris Collie, Senior Programme Planner and Kate Barnes, Channel Manager for Challenge, who all made this years Broadcast Hotshots for 2006.
In addition, we are proud that several individuals from Virgin Media Television have been successful over the past years at being accepted onto the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Festival Fast Tack event. In 2005, Kirsty Dawkins, a talented creative had a fantastic time and is now realising her dreams as a recently appointed promo producer.
